Cuong Nhu offers after-school martial arts classes in many Atlanta Public Schools (APS) locations, as well as several private schools and the Sung Ming Shu dojo. At a time when schools are cutting back on physical education under pressure to meet academic standards, Cuong Nhu offers a great workout, learning about focus and respect, and a whole lot of fun with friends.
“Our after-school program improves students’ physical and mental abilities by increasing coordination, discipline, memorization, and respect for others,” says Shawn McElroy, director of Cuong Nhu’s children’s program. “As kids learn and move up in rank, they also take noticeable pride in their achievement. Most importantly, though, we make exercise fun – because if kids aren’t having a good time, they just won’t participate. After sitting in a classroom all day, our karate kids can’t wait to let out their energy and have a blast with their friends.”
After-school program students practice karate fundamentals, self-defense, kata (choreographed performance), and the ethics of friendship and cooperation, all within our fun, game-filled approach.
“Kids see some of the greatest results from taking martial arts,” says Doug Storm, assistant director of Cuong Nhu’s children’s program. “They gain self-confidence, self-control, and a non-defeatist attitude, all while getting good, solid exercise. It’s not unusual to see their behavior improve and their grades go up. We hear this from parents all the time.”
